MAX MEADOWS - Galax knocked off previously unbeaten Roanoke Catholic twice on Saturday to win its third straight Fort Chiswell Invitational volleyball tournament.
The Maroon Tide improved to 7 - 2 with its seventh straight win in the championship match, a 25- 22, 22-25, 15-9 win over the Celtics. The tournament title was Galax's eighth in the past 10 years.
"We had a great day," said Galax coach Rose Houk. "The girls played with a lot of heart and they showed great team unity. This should really give us a confidence boost."
Galax opened preliminary play with a 25-20, 25-19 win over Rural Retreat before handing Roanoke Catholic its first loss of the season, 25-13, 25-20. The Maroon Tide dropped host Fort Chis well 25-15, 25-8 to earn a spot in the championship match against Catholic.
Allison White was named the tournament's MVP after registering 45 kills, 22 digs and 12 blocks on the day. Kelsey Reedy also earned all-tournament recognition, coming up with 35 digs.
Bailey Shumate (17 kills, 21 digs) and Kemberlea Simmons (15 kills, 13 blocks) also had a big tournament at the net, and Jenna White put up 44 assists inthe four matches.
Drew Cardwell led the Tide with 27 serving points, Kaitlin Porter added 20 points and Shumate fired four aces on the day.
